John 3:1-25

Pastor Troy VanHorn

HEAD:  What did I learn?

(How did my understanding of God change, what thought, fact, or insight did I discover?)

HEART:  What did I feel?

(Does it match up with what God has said about me in His Word? Does it move me closer to Him or separate us?)

HANDS:  What will I do about it?

(Is there a sin to repent of and confess, is there an attitude to change, a behavior to stop or start?)

What do you think were the motives of Nicodemus in coming to Jesus?  Why do you believe that?

As a Pharisee, a teacher of the law, Nicodemus should have known what scripture had to say about the Messiah, the Holy Spirit, and salvation.  Did Jesus condemn Nicodemus for his lack of understanding?  Is there someone in your life that you are condemning for their lack of spiritual understanding?

What do we see in Jesus’ response to Nicodemus?  Discuss it as a group.

(A willingness to take time with him, to teach him, a heart to remind him of God’s love for him and the world, and a willingness to lead him to God.)

What does it take to see the kingdom of God as seen in these verses?

What does it take to enter the kingdom of God as seen in these verses?

Verse 8 says “you” twice.  The first time is a singular you and the second time is a plural you.  Discuss the significance of this distinction.

Jesus spoke to the heart of Nicodemus.  Nicodemus told Jesus he believed he was from God and yet Jesus says to him, you have not received his message or believed in him.  He then led him to the salvation message of John 3:16.  How did God lead you to salvation?

Read John 7:40-52 and John 19:38-42.  Do you think Nicodemus became a believer is Jesus?  Explain your answer
