Bread has been a staple for humanity for all time. There are more than 100 types of bread. And then each type has a variation. What is your favorite kind of bread?
Jesus told the people (v.27) to “do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son Of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” Where is the majority of the world laboring? Where is the majority of your labor?
Jesus said “I am the bread of life.” He did this, in a synagogue, immediately following feeding over 5000 people in the backcountry when they had no food. The people wanted another sign-meaning another meal-or better. They wanted Jesus to prove he was better than Moses by providing ongoing food for them. Have you asked God for a sign before you would believe? Did he deliver? Did you ask for another? How is this a sign of maturity?
Jesus told the people to eat his flesh and drink his blood. This was a huge problem for those that were following. Blood was reserved for the sacrifice of the atonement. It was splashed up against the altar after the sacrifice of the Passover lamb…The lamb that was eaten before the Israelites were delivered from Egypt. Jesus makes this claim and many desert him. It challenged their limited understanding. How does the person and work of Jesus challenge your understanding to believe and follow? (If you don’t struggle in anyway, perhaps the Jesus you are following is not the one Scripture is describing.
What would a life dedicated to following Jesus completely look like today? How would our home be different? How would our church be different? How would my life need to change to make these things possible?
